Road Rage: The Danish Style

Denmark is often considered as a true urban cyclists' paradise and rightly so. However, the reality might -sometimes- be bit different. Here's a translated news bit from a Danish newspaper, which does NOT tell how this incident came about. Police is searching for the attacker:

"At the final stop on Ønsbækvej offender came into the bus and the driver assigned several punched in the face. As shown in the photograph from the bus surveillance camera was the perpetrator dressed as a cyclist. "

Cinelli Vigorelli CX. Kinda.

It's already getting dark and cold up here in the north, now only the snow is missing anymore. Mr. Konkeli is prepared - with some 700x32mm CX tires (I dunno which ones exactly, though). But yes, they do fit. So now you know.

Mystery Cranksets pt.II: 'The Plot Thickens'

Since even the mighty red bearded blog behemoth from Brooklyn that is John Prolly picked up on this issue, I wanted to continue the epic search for the origins of the mysterious so-called Campy Nuovo Record Copy Cat cranksets appearing on several 2010 fixed gear complete bikes.

So, following the hot tip dropped by my man Chainthug, I navigated to the Origin8 website. But when I searched their 'Classic Sport' line cranksets and chainrings, what did I discover? There were nice pictures of everything else but NO pictures of the Classic Sport ones!

This is starting to look more and more like some kind of a grand conspiracy now...

What's next, H+Son drops a new 'classic track crankset' insipired by the original Sugino Super Mighty cranks or something?

Tuomo, Get Off The Sidewalk! RIGHT NOW!

I just discovered that Helsinki's very own one-man-messenger-service with a cargo bike is being interviewed in the issue #15 of Urban Velo. Which is great because Tuomo is a cool guy with some serious ideals about running his business, and modern life in general.

But what is our man doing, posing like that on the sidewalk!? ;)

Mack Superlight Hubs

You remember Mack hubs, right?

Mystery Cranksets

As if Electra's new Ticono line wasn't enough, here's another new-production crankset which appears to be direct copy of Camopagnolo's classic Nuovo Record.

Same cranks can apparently be seen on 2010 Fixie Inc. Black Jack, Pashley Clubman and Condor Classico Pista models but none of these companies have revealed which brand cranks these actually are, or who makes them. Anyhow, they look pretty crappy in comparison to the real thing.

Ewan McGregor Goes Fixed

EDIT:

I was just informed that Ewan rides a GOrilla Hattara frame and is kitted out in Swerve clothing, all provided by www.tokyofixedgear.com. Plus he's wearing Adidas X Stone Island Sambas, which I kinda dig.

Apparently Ewan already had a Pake earlier but now he rides happily the GOrilla after acquiring it at the filming of his latest movie 'The Last Word".

So now you know.

WTF?

Don't ask. Seen at Kentalog.

Electra Ticino // Hubs & Cranks

It seems that Electra is branching out from their cruiser bike stuff, which I honestly hate BTW, into more classic styled products with their new Ticino line.

Those hubs, apparently soon available both as fixed and 8/9/10 speed, look a lot like certain highly sought after Campy hubs of old. Does the name 'Sheriff Star' ring a bell? And they come with ceramic bearings, which is nice. But, funnily enough, the road hubs are NOT compatible with Campagnolo cassettes. Not much respect shown, then?

On the other hand, while the fluted cranksets don't appear to be quite so blatant copies of Nuovo Record but you can seen where the inspiration came from. What strikes me as bit odd here is why aren't they making those single speed cranks in 165mm lenght? Also, 135bcd is pretty stupid choice ATMO.

I've no idea when these will be available and what they will cost but they're all in the downloadable catalogue on their site.

Harry Quinn RIP

No, my daily beater bike still is fine, thanks, but I just discovered that the man who very likely built it passed away about two weeks ago. Very sad. Apparently Harry Quinn and his brand was quite legendary, judging by the number people who rode his frames to numerous victories both on the track and road (Gordon Singleton above, legendary Reg Harris etc.), as well as the people who learned the art of framebuilding from him or worked with him.

"Harry Quinn - Top Frame Builder

News Posted: 8 October 2009

Harry Quinn, the man behind one of the country's best know and longest-standing cycling brands has died at the age of 92. The Liverpool based dealer and frame builder was a pivotal figure in the Merseyside cycling scene up to the nineteen eighties and touched the lives of many of the top riders through his prowess as a frame builder.

Amongst the top riders who used Harry Quinn frames were Bill Bradley, the 1959 Milk race winner and legendary sprinter Reg Harris. Harry also designed and built frames for other brands, including Viking.

Harry's business was located in Walton Road in Liverpool. His frames were generally shorter of wheelbase and steeper angled than those of other manufacturers and in an era when frame builders possessed almost mythical qualities for riders, to own a Harry Quinn framed bike placed you at the top of the equipment pecking order.

There's an interesting thread on Harry Quinn on the Veloriders forum, including some images:
